Manifest Monday // Lost In Textlation – The 5 Perks of Living Unplugged

 The time I arrived home one morning, following a night of getting lost in an epic tour of Toronto with a friend I had just met (in all fairness, I did forewarn her of my direction impairment), attending a business premier, eating copious amounts of delicious plant-based food (and a couple of squares of Giddy Yoyo dark chocolate), going to one of my favourite places (I know where you’ve guessed but it was, in fact, not the beach this time); the airport, and sharing a vegan burrito & very cozy ride home with a nomadic traveler & six-foot tall surfboard.
So naturally, the first thing I wanted to do was to snuggle into bed to check my Instagram, lurk his surf & travel photos (videography being what he does for a living) and “follow” the freedom project, a not-for-profit organization of which I’d just gabbed about with the founder and CEO over cauliflower & beet salads.
That, however, proved more difficult with the loss of my wi-fi reception, and what good is a phone without Internet and iMsg?? Now, I wasn’t particularly disgruntled on the matter until I found out our wi-fi was working, it was my phone that wasn’t and a quick call to Telus unveiled their cynical plan to ruin my lurking escapades : their system was down.
Stranded without a phone, gasping for reception, clinging desperately to my every last hope of vicarious traveling through mini photos on an instant feed, I gave in, put my cell down and vowed to spend the remainder of the day without it.

Even cell phones have their limits and so should you! While your cell may disconnect you from web surfing now and again, life may connect you with a new friend and surfer. While your cell phone may lose service for texting, life gives you the service of personable phone calling. And though your phone may, at some point, limit you from fixating on a screen, life will have you transfixed on the world around you. We would all do well to stick limits on our phones before they teach us this lesson on their own merit and these are 5 Holistic perks that emerged from being lost in textlation:
 

Perk #1: Mastering the art of communication beyond the 7%

  • What happened when I solemnly swore to stay off my phone? I actually had to call people! Now I for one, love talking on the phone, I adore it, and this was the perfect excuse. As social beings, we need to actually hear people’s intonations and their “LOLs.” Laughter, after all, is intoxicating and stimulates our feel good endorphins when we hear it in person. Reading the abbreviation “LOL” doesn’t do it justice. In fact, through our personal lives, social lives, right down to our business lives, communication is everything, but a measly 7% of communication comes through the content of the message. What accounts for the remaining 93%? UCLA professor AlbertMehrabian found that 58% of communication is through body language, and 35% through vocal tone, pitch, and emphasis.
    • Prescription For Wellness; when discussing important news or attempting to resolve an issue, refrain from the temptation to do so over text message. Calling is an upgrade but to reap the benefits of the 58% body language communication, you want to do so in person.

Stranded on a dessert island

  • A little effect I like to call: lost in textlation: no matter what you type or how strategically you type it, the true intention (sarcasm, joking, sweet vs flirty, serious..) will never translate in the exact same way to the receiving end (and this is even before considering an accidental autocorrect-desert is a lot less appetizing than dessert).  The other person is bound to read it differently and this just leads to crossed eyes and hair pulling, neither of which are considered healthy practises.

 

Free to a good roam

  • Money, yes. I know the struggle all too well of roaming charges when we grace the border while touring Niagara Falls. My phone, being the adventurous type, loves the thrill of pretending it is in the USA and as a consequence, charges me in the long run. Of course, I weasel my honest way out of roaming fees and so should you! But the roaming I’m referring to here is the constant checking of your cellular device. PEW Research Center found that 67% of cell users check their phone for messages, alerts, and calls even when  their phone isn’t ringing or vibrating.  Phones offer a fantastic modality for distraction and can drain our days of motivation and promote procrastination.
  • Putting my phone down forced me to not look at a tiny screen all day. Without constantly checking my phone and getting aimlessly lost in Instagram “liking” and “foodporn” drooling, I found myself having more time and therefore, being far more productive and active! And an additional perk: there are problems that set in with dry eyes simply because people become transfixed on screens and withhold the autonomic impulse to blink! So I had happy, glossy eyes too 😉

    • Want to kick-start an empowered, energized and productive day? Disconnect from your phone, step outside, create your day’s game plan, read, meditate and go about your morning unplugged for 1 hour first thing each morning!

Backspace the aches and pains

  • Dry eyes? How about the painful cell phone hunch? We were born with opposable thumbs and with this came our natural stature to walk upright on two legs. And though those nimble thumbs have come in handy for navigating miniature keyboards, they’ve also provoked a real pain the back.  The hunch is the new physical condition evocative of the ever downward tilt of the neck and shoulders from the constant use of our phones. On average we spend 2-4 hours daily in this unnatural angle according to CBS news which also suggests that good posture reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol to help you become more at peace. And speaking of a piece of zen…

Unlimited post-phone presence plans

  • Yes, presence. When disconnecting with the phone, we connect more to ourselves. There is less comparison to the glorious moments of people’s lives (the only ones we really post after all) and more time to ground and center your thoughts. You become more in tune with your body, your thoughts and emotions. Cellular devices can become coping mechanisms and pretty poor ones at that. Ever been bored or sad and looked through copious amounts of fitness and travel photos posted and felt the comparison creep in?
  • When we disconnect our phones, it forces us to look up and connect to our surroundings and the people around us. In our fast paced technological world, time, energy and awareness are three of the greatest things we could gift another human being with and can create a lasting impact. To have genuine, human, in person interactions where facial expressions come from a face and not an emoji and hearts are felt, not typed ❤
Instead of living vicariously through the adventures of my new friend from her trip to Guatemala or surfing photos of my back seat burrito buddy, I dreamt of my own travels there and made a game plan on how to do it.
And so I leave you with this: a suggestion for this week’s Wellness Weekly Challenge: to one day (or at least half a day) a week, find yourself in a total technology detox. This includes computers, cell phones, TVs, etc. To disconnect to pigmented images on a screen and connect authentically to yourself, to the incredible people you’re with and to the animated and unemoji’d world around you.

Manifest Monday // 4 Nike Inspired Lessons To “Kick” Our Goals Into High Gear

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”

Have you been wanting to change your diet? Telling yourself you’ll start exercising? Continuously contemplating dusting off the intricately cob webbed nutrition novel on your bookshelf? What have you been waiting for?

The fact is; life can change in an instant and so can you.  You do not have to wait for tomorrow to get motivated. You don’t have to wait to get back on track or to strap on your sneakers and hit the trails, or grab your yoga mat and head to the park. All you have to do is decide that your health outweighs all of the doubts in your head, decide to move, drink water, eat more plants, read the ingredients and eat real food. Every little thing you do is bringing you that one step closer to full, radiant health.  So forget what happened yesterday or the day before that, what will you do with today? That’s what counts!

In honor of our fresh starts, the weekends blue moon and a brand new month, these are 4 tips and tricks to run with and “kick” your goals into high gear!

1) Mission Possible

  • I recently purchased a pair of bright blue sneakers with the infamous Nike swoop sporting the sides. I have been eyeing runners like these for years and as a birthday gift, my grandparents graciously invested in them for me! First and foremost, let me tell you that these gave me a good run for my money before I even got my hands, or feet, on them. But  it was my mission, and this determination is what got me ultimately got me started.

 

  • How to run with it:
    • No matter your goals, create the mindset of determination. Instead of thinking of that goal as a must do, think of it as an adventure or mission! This positive shift in mindset will assist you in reaching any goal you set out to achieve.

2) Find your footing 

Now the second thing I want you to know is that I DID get those sneakers after persistent phone calls and sports store shopping. When I walked out triumphantly with kicks in hand, those did not come off my feet for days and the morning after they came home with me, I was motivated and ready to hit the road running!  Here’s the thing: new is exciting! It’s thrilling and this excitement and anticipation in the new, will fuel us with the motivation to start our goals.
  • How to run with it;
    • When you’re looking to begin something, remember how you felt when it had that initial spark of a new idea, and create something exciting around it. You don’t have to go buy a sleek new pair of sneakers to start running, just pick a new and exciting trail. Want to start eating more salads? Find an adventurous, fresh topping to incorporate such as avocado, or mango or jicama. Whatever it is, find excitement in what you aim to achieve.

3) Embrace the black flies

I hit the trails the other day in expectation of a leisurely walk through the woods. The black flies, on the other hand, had a different idea entirely and apparently, well into the thick overgrowth, felt I was out of shape and in need of a run. And so once again, these sneakers gave me a good run, stop free, until I’d reached the top of the steep hill to the parking lot.

Though I don’t recommend taking an extensive run in the dead of heat (and I was sure to refuel with my electrolyte elixir; https://lifeofeden.com/2014/09/01/the-biggest-workout-mistake-i-see-the-electrolyte-elixir/), I will say this; often times we allow ourselves to think too much of how we can’t. Did I think I was in any condition to run that day? Nope! But when my attention was taken away from my thoughts and focussed on avoiding the relentless feasting of black flies, I found that I ran, I ran a whole awful lot and didn’t tire until I saw I was near the end.

  • How to run with it:
    • If you want to do something, look to the black flies! In other words; shift your focus. For every one excuse that says you can’t, give yourself three excuses that say you CAN. Do this every time and this repetition of “I cans” and all of the possibilities you create of HOW will rewire the patterning of your brain. And when you can; stop thinking, and just go do it! When the impulse is there, run with it!

 

4 ) Small steps in the right direction

One of the top obstacles that prevents people from beginning is the daunting feeling of being overwhelmed. Have you wanted to start dieting but felt so overburdened by all of the conflicting information and abundance of overbearing diet regimes that you called it quits before you began? Or perhaps you fell into the never-ending cycle of: “I’ll start tomorrow”. Let me tell you this; there is no day like today! You will always run into heated days, busy days, days with nagging black flies that want to prevent you from doing what you are doing; do it anyway and start that mindset today.
 
Wellness Weekly Challenge;
Right now, choose one thing that will start to progress your health. Write down one big and attainable goal you can accomplish this week.  Commit to doing that one thing every day this week for a certain amount of time. It could be meditating for 20 minutes, walking an hour each morning, or drinking a liter of water as soon as you wake up. Whatever it is for you, make it count!  That’s your mission! So go write down this weeks goal, be clear, be committed and in the wise words of Nike: Just Do It!

Manifest Monday // 5 Bites To A Guilt-Free Week With Lemon Meringue Pie

Birthday meals have always varied but there is one thing that’s remained the same these past few years and that’s my absolute favourite dessert of lemon meringue pie! Baked fresh by my mother, sweetened with nothing but love (no refined sugars at all right? 😉 )  and topped with a light and fluffy layer of golden peaked meringue, it is to die for and no lifestyle would have me denying you this basic human right to a homemade lemon meringue. That is simply unethical. But understanding our relationship to food and how to best indulge is the key to holistic success and exactly what we’re taking a sweet little bite into this morning!
First, let me ask you this:
What was the last thing you ate that you felt guilty about?
  • Perhaps it was candy, ice cream, potato chips, cake, pastries or fast food as these were the top guilt inducing foods according to a survey published in Appetite in 2009. Or perhaps it was a late night binge or a craving you succumbed to.  Whatever it was for you, let yourself off the hook!
The  one thing I would never want you do is become afraid of food or to associate food with guilt. Food can greatly enrich our lives and make us feel AMAZING! But nothing in life is so serious that we should be experiencing feelings of guilt, regret or self sabotaging thoughts over it and if you do, redirect your thoughts to being grateful for what you ate instead.

  • The other day I was listening to a Tony Robbins podcast where he spoke about how for years he was meticulous and adamantly strict with his diet until his wife came into the picture. A nutritionist who savoured greens juices and salads until one day they went out and she ordered a hot fudge sundae. The voice of a shocked Tony Robbins was comical to hear but when he asked “what are you doing?!” she replied; “living you bastard!” Brilliant.
  •  Now, a hot fudge sundae is not on my list of indulgences. The sheer thought of dairy to someone who is lactose intolerant is simply, well… intolerable. But at the Canada Day carnival a few weeks ago, though my friend graciously offered to eat the candy off a candy apple for me  or lick off the butter and salt and give me the popcorn kernels, instead we walked up to the local shops and found dairy free sherbet. A rainbow of sugars and food dyes and who knows what else and you know what? Who cares! I almost always travel prepared with food but when in doubt, I pick the best thing I can scavenge and savour every last bite of it.

Food is wonderful! It is nourishing, empowering and, of course, tasty. But we don’t want it to consume our thoughts. When we obsess over everything we eat, we create stress in our body and this will negatively impact what it is that we are eating. You know how to intuitively listen to your body and give it what it needs, that is all you need. Now you can heave a sigh of relief, relax and enjoy your treat!

5 go-to tips to enjoying every bite!

 1) Think of food as an experience
  • Food is not “good” or “bad,” that’s our labeling of it. Food is an experience. Like all experiences in life, they come with consequences and so if it is a consequence we like, we choose to have that experience again. Likewise if the result was something that we did not like, we choose to avoid it the next time. Don’t like the way you felt after have that ice-cream cone or slice of cake? Remember that and chose to steer clear of it the next time. Instead of being a bad experience, it was a learning experience and one that progressed your health rather than diminished it.
2) Forbid the Forbidden
  •  The mindset of guilt can, in fact, heighten the pleasure of an experience. Think about this for a moment; if drinking was entirely acceptable, would it have been as appealing to you growing up? The same is true for foods. We tend to associate “forbidden” foods with delicious foods and so when we experience guilt, we think that the food must be delicious and we anticipate more pleasure. See the issue?
  • Instead of thinking of “forbidden foods”, recognise that it is simply food and is there for you anytime if you choose. Taking the labeling away from food takes the power back from your plate and puts into your hands.
3) When applicable; Make it as healthy as possible
  •  Choose the healthiest option you can. Neither dairy nor gluten work for me, so even with treats, I avoid these except for the odd thing once or twice a year (or Paris! French baguettes and real, authentic goats cheese beg for a little splurge). For the lemon meringue pie we used a store-bought gluten-free crust mix that, although had some ingredients I normally stay away from, it was a far cry from gluten and something I could feel good in treating myself to!
4) Savour it and be present
  • Really taste your food. Pick out the flavours, notice the textures. This is the difference between mindlessly scorfing down food without experiencing it vs truly being present to savour it. Closing your eyes removes one of our key senses thereby heightening the others, including taste. Take your time and chew at least 35-40 times which will allow for the optimal digestion of our food to reduce stomach pains of indigestion.
  • Bonus: Doing both of these will help us to feel satisfied faster, enabling us to need smaller portion sizes than what we would if we were gulping it down fast.
5) Keep on track the remainder of the day – to treat yourself is not to cheat yourself!
  • Eating a cookie does not mean that the rest of the day has gone to crumbs, quite the opposite! Instead, enjoy the treat and balance it with awesome and healthy meals the rest of the day.
  • If feeling a post treat guilt trip creep in, do something particularly cleansing. Perhaps you will drink lemon water or drink a green smoothie or balance it with a salad. You may even try oil pulling or soak in a bath. Whatever it is to remind yourself that you are taking care of your body and nourishing yourself.

  • Don’t get so hell-bent on your diet that you forget that food is just, well… Food! Let food enrich your life, not restrict your life. I  adore whole, energizing foods that make me feel amazing and have healed me for years and every now and again a night at the carnival, a good dose of Giddy Yoyo dark chocolate (my favourite!), and a slice of homemade lemon meringue pie.  I LOVE food, and it can be used to make our lives, well, come to life! But always remember that it’s not about restricting or guilt, it’s about experiencing it and having fun with it, all of it!
  • This week; be present with your food and treat it as a gift. What you ate in the past is in the past! Let that go, move forward, enjoy your food, experience and implement these strategies to drop any guilt and replace it with self-love and the experience of learning what works for your body.

Just as breakfast is fuel for the day ahead, what we feed our minds each and every morning matters. Let these three exercises be the first thing you do the moment you wake up. By doing these every single day, you will start to rewire the programming of the brain so that a motivated mindset becomes your default mindset.

These are your new three mindsets to instantly master your day!

1) What are you grateful for?

  • Write this down. Write three things every morning that you are grateful for. Gratitude is one of the simplest ways to increase energy, boost our feel good endorphins and feel empowered by shifting our thoughts to positive, productive thinking.   • Gratitude is what has been coined; “intrinsically self-esteeming.” People with gratitude have been shown to be more proactive in attaining personal goals and this trait has been proven to help athletes reach optimal performance. It has also been shown that grateful individuals have less incidents of illness, reduced risk of depression and have a greater sence of wellbeing, all of which are necessary to carry out our motivation.
  • Prescription for wellness; grab a gratitude journal, keep it by your bed and write three things you are grateful for each day this week.

 

2) Ask: what am I excited for?

  • Passion is the driver of ambition and ambition, the fuel of motivation. If you want to feel motivated, awake, alert and alive, give yourself something to be excited about! When we are excited, we experience a natural high and will feel instantly energised and motivated to do something. Energy stems more from thought than anything else and you can see last Monday’s post to master your mind.
  • Prescription for wellness: Every morning ask yourself; what am I excited for today? It doesn’t matter whether it is something big or small, as long as you truly feel excited, you are fueling your day!

 

3) Mantras

  • What is it that you want? From yourself? From life? Write it down. Let’s take motivation. Want more? Write down something like “I am fueled each and every day with motivation. I am thrilled to wake up each morning and get going.” It doesn’t matter what you say or how you say it as long as you believe it. Whatever works for you, write it as though it’s yours and repeat this every morning and every night.
  • What this does; we are largely what beliefs we hold in our lives. Start paying attention to how you respond in everyday situations and you will see this. Often times we are on autopilot and responding from a place of repetition. What mantras do is change our subconscious programing. So; if you typically wake each day feeling unmotivated, this mantra will help induce feelings of motivation and the more you do this, the stronger the reprogramming in your brain until it becomes habit to wake up motivated and energised! Pretty powerful stuff.

Manifest Monday // The Brain Hack To Instantly Boost Your Health

If I were to ask you right now, “how are you?,” what would your response be?

Much of the time we tend to answer this question with an “I am” or an “I am feeling,” but is this the most productive way? Our brains respond differently to an “I am” vs an “I feel” response and I am about to show you how to use this to your best advantage to cultivate health!

It is a quick holistic life hack that can instantly give you more health, happiness, feelings of abundance and live everyday this week on an empowered note with this week’s Prescription For Wellness Challenge! Here’s how it works:

 

I think therefore, I AM

  • “I am” is an affirmative statement. It is making a statement about our identity that is then planted in our minds. With repetition, these statements become us. It is saying that “this feeling or this state of health is who I am.” The fact of the matter is that you are not this emotion or feeling, or illness.
  • Much of how our body conducts itself is based largely on our thoughts and beliefs. It is the placebo effect in action. If you are in the healing process, for example, think of this illness as being something other than you. You are not what needs to be healed nor are you your feelings and when you connect to this, they will hold less control over you and you will be better equipped to deal with them.
  • Prescription for wellness: When using an “I am” statement, always and only use it in a positive context. What we say we are, we become.

 

I feel …

  • “I feel” holds less power. Feelings are not permanent. When we express ourselves this way we are stating our feelings in the moment but not trapping them in our psyche. It is okay to express ourselves, no feeling is “wrong” but we want to do so in a productive manner that doesn’t keep us trapped in those feelings.
  • Holistic life hacks: Want to feel instantly more energised? Next time you feel tiredness within you, think to yourself “I am tired.” Sit with this for a moment and observe how you feel. Then change this to the statement “I am energised.” Really feel it. Convince yourself that you are energized. Did you notice a difference? Much of how we feel throughout the day is based largely on what we are telling ourselves and what we believe ourselves to be. So choose to speak of what you want to feel and choose to speak of health!

 

There is ____ within me.

  • I first heard this statement from Eckhart Tolle. It implies neither that we are our feelings or illness nor that we must remain with them. It denounces them. Disempowers them and puts you in control and assists in making you feel empowered with the ability to change your current circumstance. In neuroscience, this statement has been studied as an “I am doing” implying you can simply stop doing that emotion and thereby choose another. Whichever statement works for you, use that! Ultimately, you are in control, but what we feed our minds is equally as important as what we feed our bodies!

 

Brain Fuel Cheat Sheet

  • If you are feeling tired, or are speaking of an illness within you, do so sparingly and use the statement “there is ____ within me” or “I am doing.” You might say something like “there is tiredness with me” or “I am doing fatigue.” These hold the least power, are impermanent and allow you to take control of the situation.

 

  • When expressing positive emotions and health conditions, do so with an “I am” or “I feel” statement to cement these positive aspects into your psyche and attract more of it!
